Arezu returns to her father's apartment she inherits which also houses the ghosts of a traumatic affair with an older man when she was a teenager.

I originally started reading this as a physical book and had to put it down about halfway through. I picked it up later on audio and found that it was easier to absorb (for me, anyway). It may be that I just wasn't in the right frame of mind for the heavy subject matter at first.

Written in incredible prose, this was a meditation on Arezu's trauma as she confronts her past head-on in order to reclaim her power.

This brought up many issues, how impressionable girls on the brink of womanhood are taken advantage of under the guise of romance. Also how culture and religion perpetuate the lack of sexual education for females and bodily autonomy. An examination of the lasting effects of the general belief that women must be subservient to men, sexually or otherwise. Encouraging women to insist on taking agency over their own bodies and sexuality.

Even though this wasn't what I expected, I'm glad I picked this back up. It was a powerful message.
