Powerful, but emotionally heavy...

This book was very powerful, but also a very emotionally charged - and often challenging - read. For me I would say it was definitely worth it, but readers should be cautious in regards to some of the triggering content.

Savage Tongues was not a plot heavy book. It was very centralized to the Arezu's reckoning with her past relationship with a much older man. Although not particularly graphic in terms of the depictions of this relationship, the emotional journey that Arezu goes on is one that is haunting, cathartic, and ultimately felt very realistic. It was not an emotional journey that went directly from point A to point B, it was full of stops and regressions and major leaps forward.

This book also deals with much broader concepts that involve emotional grappling from its characters - racism, islamophobia, conflict between Israel and Palestine...just to name a few. I felt the author handled each topic in an incredibly nuanced and personal way - I found it very powerful to read. I also found the author's exploration of language and putting grief into words very impactful.

I will admit, this wasn't a light and breezy summer read for those looking for that right now! The writing style was definitely a bit on the denser side throughout. But it was very moving and powerful, and those who enjoy books that really wrestle with personal journeys over action-packed plots - this definitely fits the bill.
