You get a clear picture immediately of what a difficult life this character has led. She’s Iranian American and feels like her very existence is at odds. Her dad had zero respect for her mother, yet he found a way to take a second wife.
As a teenager, Arezu goes to Spain to visit her father.she’s assuming he will let her down again and she is not wrong. He isn’t even there when she shows up.
She is left to deal with Omar. Omar is 40,he is her step mother’s nephew and he becomes Arezu’s lover despite their 20+ year age difference. She describes him as her “torturer” and says that he created her own image of herself.
As an adult, twenty years later, Arezu is struggling with what happened with Omar and how she lost control of her life because of him. She feels like she has to go back, confront the memories, in order to get herself and her life on track.
Well written but I don’t want to read it.
