First love and a family feud
Salt and Sugar by Rebecca Carvalho is a YA romance evoking Romeo and Juliet. Set in Brazil, Lari Ramires and her family are grieving her grandmother while figuring out next steps for their bakery, Salt. At the same time, they're "at war" with the Molinas and their bakery across the street: Sugar. Both businesses are under threat by Deals Deals, a supermarket chain that's been leading local small, family-owned businesses to close.
Lari wants to help with Salt but is under strict instructions from her mom to study so she can go to university and live out her father's dream of studying economics. But what is it that Lari wants her future to look like? An unlikely alliance with Pedro, the Molinas' teen son, helps her figure that out -- and sparks fly along the way.
This one's definitely for those who like a fair share of drama -- the familial feud is no joke. It felt a bit long to me, but I kept thinking that I'd have loved flying through these pages as a teen, so it's probably an appropriate length for the genre.
