Salt and Sugar is the story of Lari and Pedro, two teens caught in the middle of a multi-generational feud between their family's warring bakeries. The story follows Lari as she gets to know herself, the true people that work in the bakery across the street, and the family secrets that change her life forever.
The novel is fast-paced and highly entertaining. I finished it in 2 days. When I first read an excerpt of the novel, I really wasn't impressed. But, upon reading it the second time around, it really hooked me from page one. I find the story to be compelling and engaging, and I think the characters are likable, despite all the tension between the feuding families.
The setting and descriptions are lush and beautiful. It makes you feel like you're watching the drama between the bakeries unfold with your very eyes. And the enemies to lovers romance? It totally worked for me. I was all in.
I will say that there's a LOT of crying and running away... like.. a LOT. But,I had a really good time reading this novel, and I'm so glad I gave it a second chance! I'd recommend this one to fans of YA contemporaries, enemies to lovers romances, and Romeo and Juliet re-tellings.
