Salt and Sugar is a YA retelling of Romeo and Juliet that takes place in Brazil from the perspective of Lari Ramires. The opening chapter felt initially a bit confusing and disjointed, but that reflects Lari's state of mind as she's coping with the death of her beloved grandmother and matriarch of the family. The story seems fast-paced and vivid with lots of sensory details painting a picture of Lari, her family's bakery and her relationships with other strong women. It'll be interesting to get to know the Molinas family and see how Lari and Pedro work together. Promising start!
