I have seen so many mixed reviews about Saint X but I, personally, loved it. This was a totally different way of telling this kind of story, which may not be what some suspense lovers are looking for. Saint X is more focused on the aftermath of a shocking death and the unknown and unforeseen ripples it causes than the whodunit mystery (though that is a question hanging over the whole novel, of course).

Despite slowing down in the middle, I never stopped needing to know what happened to Alison.

The writing is fantastic and there are so many truths in the novel. Big and small. I was hooked right away by the descriptions of the American vacationers in the Caribbean - embarrassed to see myself in some of their behaviors and realize how ultimately predictable we all are. I particularly loved the comparisons between her diary entries describing events and other people's observations of the same events. It was so true to me that her journals were expressions of who she wanted to be and that even in that medium she was uncomfortable being honest about herself.

I highly recommend trying this one out!
