In Saint X, Schaitkin has created her own genre with a smidge of thriller, psychological suspense and mystery and a dollop of coming of age, true crime and literary fiction. It's a brillant debut novel and proves she can write beautiful prose and stunning, atmospheric locations which include a fictitious Caribbean island and gritty NYC. She weaves multiple POVs in two timelines and provides plenty of fodder for book club discussions on race, class, and privilege. At it's heart, it's a novel about grief and what happens to the survivors in a tragedy which included her family, friends, and accused killers. The reader finds out the truth about the bond between the sisters, Alison and Claire. Was it love, pity or obsession? There are references to sex and drugs.
