This was originally one of my most anticipated books of 2020, I was SUPER intrigued and excited by the summary that came out a few months earlier. Mysteries/thrillers are my genre of choice, and I loveeee anything with an island setting, so consider me sold! But when the book actually got published I kept hearing that the summary was a bit misleading - it’s more of a character analysis than a thriller.
The book follows Claire, the sister of a girl who mysteriously died while their family is vacationing on Saint X. Everything that occurred on that vacation is told in the first chapter of the book, and the remainder follows adult Claire, who is still trying to figure out what happened. Even though this book isn’t as much of a thriller as I originally thought, the author does a great job of keeping things moving along and I was thoroughly engaged. There IS still a mystery about what exactly happened that night, and things do start unfolding about halfway through the novel.
It ended up being a 5-star read for me. I couldn’t put it down, and finished it in a day. Excellent debut book.
