A family is vacationing on an Island called Saint X during winter break and their college aged daughter disappears. Later she is found dead. The police don't know whether or not the death is an accident or the result of foul play. Her family is left with no answers and moves on with their lives as best they can.
Their other daughter, Claire, is only 7 years old when her sister Alison disappears. Alison was the ideal daughter and Claire is seen as second best. About 15 years later, Alison is working at a publishing company in New York and takes a cab that is driven by one of the men who was suspected to be part of her sister's disappearance. This fated cab ride sends Claire down a spiral to figure out what happened to her sister and to learn more about her sister prior to the death.
This story reminded me slightly of the Natalee Hollaway disappearance, but it moves further and explores depths of racism, classism and how people either move on or don't move on after a tragedy.
