Claire's family is on vacation on a tropical island when her older sister Alison goes missing. Alison, college-age, has been slipping out and having her own little side vacation. Unfortunately, Claire is too young to truly understand what is happening. The author does a fabulous job of building up the location - the resort and it's amenities.
When Alison's body is found and 2 employees from the resort are arrested, the family is devastated. I felt the heartbreak for these parents and the confusion Claire felt.
The story then takes a turn to an older Claire living in NYC and a chance encounter that leads her down a dark path.
The intrigue, mystery, and desire to find out just what happened to Alison was well written. I think what she's experiencing is something that so many family members feel - an almost obsession with finding answers. This is what kept me reading.
I wasn't disappointed by the ending, in fact I loved it.
