At the surface, this novel is about Alison, a beautiful young lady who is found dead during her family’s beach vacation. But the story is really about... well, I’m not 100% sure, to be honest. Is it about Claire’s obsession with her sister and the man she thinks killed her? Or is it about that man and his tortured life? Honestly, this novel just covers too much.

Written in all points of view, in snippets of newspaper articles, documentary type narratives, and descriptive passages, this novel really covers all the bases.

At its core is a Natalee Holloway-Esque story of a young, beautiful girls’ vacation gone awry. But the essence of this novel is human behavior, instinct, and condition.

It was difficult to get past the first few pages often novel’s geography description I didn’t care for. Once I finally got past that, the story started getting interesting, but I think it was about 100 pages too long.
