RULES FOR VANISHING is a deliciously haunting YA horror perfect for Halloween. Told through collected documents, interviews, and texts, this book is creepy and completely engaging. Sara's sister, Becca, disappeared a year ago, leaving her a notebook that would take her to the road and following the steps of Lucy Gallows.

According to local legends, Lucy Gallows was a young girl who ran away from a wedding and got lost in the woods. Every now and then, people see her ghost. When a text goes out to the whole high school inviting them to play the game, Sara knows that this is her chance to find her sister- if she can only follow the rules of the game.

Embarking on the supernatural and horrific quest along the road, Sara and her former friends who had drifted apart after Becca's disappearance will fight for survival- but only some of them will make it out alive.

What I loved: The format of the book is really unique and engaging. The different documents and transcripts really add quite a lot to the thrilleresque feel. I was completely absorbed in this world, very quickly.

The world building is fantastic and terrifying- this is definitely a horror novel, and it's deliciously creepy. Without saying too much and giving things away, this is really perfect for Halloween with scary, paranormal elements and many spooky things along the way. I also loved all the twists at the end, which bring the whole story together.

Final verdict: This is an absolutely chillingly creepy YA thriller/horror that I recommend for anyone looking for a Halloween read. With all sorts of paranormal/supernatural elements, great world-building, and a unique format, this book pulls the reader in right from the start. Highly recommend for fans of SADIE and/or HERE THERE ARE MONSTERS.
