The author's dedication on this book caught my eye because his father was a TIME magazine correspondent for 35 years. At first the writing seemed a little stilted, bt within a few pages, I was drawn into the story and quite captivated by the fraternal twins, Rasheed and Rasheeda, as main characters in this Middle Eastern saga. I liked the surprisingly strong female characters, especially Rasheeda whose intelligence gives her the confidence to debate various religious practices with her brother.

When the local Catholic priest is observed breaking his vows of abstinence, it is not shocking - the news reports have had plenty of scandals reported over the decades. However, I was surprised at the extent of the details as well as Father Federico's insistence that Rasheed make it a point to observe his (the Father's) next encounter with the young Muslim girl who is employed as the cook. I love stories in different locations and despite the fact that I don't find Father Federico appealing, I am very interested to know what is going to happen!
