This excerpt was very intriguing. It's told from the perspective of Gaelle, a modern Haitian woman who works in a nursing home with a strange ability to heat things, and Margot, an enslaved teen from the 1860s who has the power to sense other's ailments and speed up their healing. Gaelle sometimes speaks in Creole. Gaelle initially thinks she's one-of-a-kind until a woman she's tasked to care for also displays an uncanny ability. The novel examines multiple forms of healing - the scientific methods of modernity, the supernatural, and the homeopathic properties of herbs. The novel also examines agency under slavery and how the enslave tried to make choices and retain agency. The writing flowed well, and it seems like spirits or deities may make an appearance as well. I definitely can't wait to read the rest of this thrilling novel.
