I thought this book was ok. I received it in a once upon a book club box. Not something that I would typically read. I’m also not a person that is really into history so this book took forever for me to read. Overall, unless you’re someone that is big into history, I wouldn’t recommend this book. This was one of my first reads about slavery and I just wasn’t that blown away by the book. However, if I had to pick a favorite character, it would be Grandmere, a healer. Grandmere’s knowledge of herbs and poultices gets noticed by the plantation mistress. The mistress agrees to free both Margot and her younger sister Veronique when they turn 18. As yellow fever spreads amongst the people, the promises that the mistress made to the girls fades away. Margot and Veronique decide that their best option in order to remain together would be to run away.
