Interesting Premise but Didn’t Work for Me

I really wanted to like this book which has an interesting premise. It is a book of historical fiction that uses magical realism to depict a place of safety for escaped slaves. It started off strong with the storylines of three women in different eras. One, an elderly woman in present day Ohio, another a slave in 1791 Haiti and the third a house servant in 1857 New Orleans.

Initially their stories were fascinating, but my attention began to wane as the book bounced back and forth between the timelines and left me mostly confused. About halfway through magical realism is used when “Remembrance” is introduced as the magical safe haven for escaped slaves. From there I had trouble finishing the book.

The historical elements were interesting and Ms. Woods' writing was admirable, but overall, this book was not for me. I gave it two stars.
