Four women separated by lifetimes but bound by loss, racism, and a power difficult to understand. This novel is historical fiction with magical realism woven in to create a riveting story.

I'm glad I read it instead of listened to it, because I had some difficulty keeping the women straight initially. We meet Gaelle in present day, Abigail in the late eighteenth century, and Margot and Winter in the mid nineteenth century. The novel explores the experience of enslaved women, but these women have some magic in them, and this magic allows them to take control of their lives and the destinies of their people.

On the surface, the plot offers mystery, suspense, and drama. On a deeper level, Woods explores the ramifications of a society that subjugates human beings. A thought-provoking read!
