I received an ARC of Remembrance by Rita Woods, through the BookishFirst after reading the 'First Looks' of the novel. As I had assumed during my first look review, I was not let down by this novel!

The author does a fantastic job of setting the scene of eras and location - The late 18th century New Orleans, revolutionary Haiti and the modern Ohio. In each of these eras the author tells a story of a woman of color, all different ages, but all equally as strong, while each facing personal conflicts and struggles.

::shout to all the strong women out there::

I was surprised when the magic began to weave its way thru the story as it slowly began to take on a larger roll in the novel. During the first few chapters of the novel I wasn't really sure if there was going to be anything of the sort, with only the author hinting at it every so often. I was also a little concerned that the stories of these women would remain individually focused, but eventually they were beautifully tied together. I may have not liked it so much had the author chosen not to do so. Without giving too much away, and hopefully I didn't already, I do wish some of the characters stories were a little more detailed. Even though the novel orbits several characters, it seems one..maybe two of them may have been favored most, even though each character has a powerful journey.

Other than that I found the story to be beautifully written, very detailed, and just overall very developed. Thank you BookishFirst and Forge/Macmillian Publishing Group for giving me the chance of winning this novel. I truly enjoyed it.
