Really good historical tale of 3 generations of 4 women: Galle, Mother Abigail, Winter and Margot told from present to past and we see where the future of the woman Galle is headed. Received an ARC from BookishFirst, thanks also to Forge and Macmillan. Each of the women, though not related have a special gift and some more than others with the things they can do that defies nature. Is it some sort of quantum physics, magic or what? The title of the book, “Remembrance” is a place within a place created by Mother Abigail (aka Priestess) who has born in the 1700s in Haiti and ended up in the US as a slave. Remembrance is a settlement unseen to the eye where ex-slaves escape to and stay or move on. Mother Abigail was able to fold space and time to create a thin boundary, the Edge, separating the outside world from Remembrance but Mother Abigail is getting old. Great story told from each woman’s perspective and the heartache, loss and cruelty bestowed on each during US most horrific time of slavery. One character, Josiah who was with Simona, then Mother Abigail, Winter and Galle. Who or what is he? He is able to age and then get younger with each woman he escorts along the way of her journey learning her gift, how to master it and protect others. He gives everyone the creeps, but materializes almost out of nowhere and has a gift of his own. Really enjoyed it even though I am not a fan of historical fiction especially slavery. Would love to hear more from the author on how each woman’s gift she was able to write about and make it believable in a way.
