This book centers on 4 women, 2 are slaves and 2 are not. Parts of the book are in modern times describing a woman and her caregiver and the trials faced by a black woman in Ohio. The other parts are in both the 1700s and the 1800s and detail the women's lives as slaves and then again after they reach freedom.

Slaves run to the place called "Remembrance" in order to escape slavery, this place cannot be seen or entered by white people, it is a sort of unplottable area where homes are made by those formerly in captivity. A former slave who has mystical abilities creates this place once she escapes her captors. But slavers are out to look for those who have escaped to freedom and will not stop until they receive their bounty.

I enjoyed the historical fiction aspects but the book began to drag about a third in. I found that the fantasy portion was not as compelling, I think that the stories of the women were intriguing but for me too much emphasis was placed on Remembrance and how to get there.
