A wonderful story
Thank you Bookish first for sending me an advanced publishing copy in exchange for an honest review.
Overall this was a great read. This a merging of historical fiction and magical realism. We follow the stories of women held under slavery - Margot, Winter, Mother Abigail, and we also follow a woman in our own time, Gaelle. To me the weakest part of this story was Gaelle. Most of the book I was expecting some grand journey for her, however it ends with Josiah telling her she's to be new protector - and that's it.
This story explores the horrors of slavery and doesn't hold back. We see Mother Abigail separated from her children, and Margot from her sister.
I only have two other things to nitpick. Josiah - the most mysterious character, was to me very underused. I wish we had found out more about the apparently immortal character.
And finally the cover which to me, could be improved upon. I probably would have walked right past this cover in a store which would have been a mistake.
