Queenie is a hilarious but messy story of a Jamaican woman living in London. You know the type of story, where they're likable characters who are always getting themselves into messy situations that make you laugh but a bit uncomfortable at the same time. The book starts out with her texting her boyfriend to sound more attached to him while having a pelvic exam and having to make small talk with the gynecologist, come on!

What's really nice about this book is that it is also a lot about her love for her family, and her wonderful female friendships. But what is unique about this book versus others of its type (like Bridget Jones) is that Queenie herself is a complex character dealing with very real issues, so some of her antics feel like it's her on the verge of a breakdown. You find out things about her that make some of her antics appear differently, such as the casual racism directed towards her by his family, which she can't quite process yet. This book is a perfect blend of funny, realistic, serious, and heartwarming.
