This book was okay. I found the writing to be not particularly engaging and the characters. I did empathize with Queenie and her struggles through life, but I didn’t feel like I was rooting for her throughout the book. And not that I necessarily would be the one to know, but from my perspective the book seemed to stereotype a bit too much rather than create one unique journey rooted in society’s tendencies.

I can understand the hype in the contemporary, easy prose, but to me it felt very cliched and predictable. I didn’t hate this book, it just left me wanting more. I did enjoy Queenie’s humorous take on life. I often found myself angry and confused at her decisions but maybe that was the point? Would I read another book by Candace Carty-Williams? Perhaps. Depending on the subject matter, the hype and the reviews. Would it be a must purchase? Most likely not.
