This book is not “Bridget Jones’s Diary meets Americanah” as it states on the dust jacket. This is a portrayal of a Black woman in London dealing with a miscarriage and a breakup with a White long term boyfriend. It is about how Queenie responds afterwards. It is about trauma and bad decisions. It is about family and history and how that can still impact your present. It is about friendships and sexual relationships. Queenie's relationships feel real and you hope she can navigate them. There are dark moments and good moments. I particularly loved hearing about how Queenie got her name. It's those points the author brings in that makes this such a three dimensional read. I’m glad I read this but don’t go in thinking this will be a fun rom com with Renée Zellweger. It is so much better than that. It highlights what women, and Black women in particular, go through to find healthy relationships.
