People say that 'Queenie' is similar to 'Bridget Jones' Diary' but I don't see it at all. There is no Pride and Prejudice allusion and 'Queenie' has life events that the style of 'Bridget Jones' Diary' could never show.

I listened to the audiobook of this and for me that made it more emotional than ever. The protagonist is fresh out of a relationship and she is finding it hard to deal with.
The book covers hard issues such as mental health within the Carribean community and miscarriage.
Could you miss a baby that you didn't know was there? That trauma leads to Queenie's deterorating mental health and despite all of her family and culture's opinions on mental health Queenie makes the strongest step forward in seeking and getting help that she desperately needs.
When you have panic attacks and depression it can seem like you are drowning in a tempestuous ocean. I have had depression for over a decade, sometimes you have brilliant days when you barely remember the person you were in the dark of it all, but some days you can't move because that you reminds you that you are alive and still hurting. I can't pretend to know what it feels like to lose a baby on top of that, but I do know some of the strongest people I know have gone through that. You are not strong because you overcome such an event, you are strong because you over come it and are able to still live and want a live that child will not have. You are strong because you have seen the world burn and now you want to carry on and perhaps have more children. The happiness can sometimes out weigh the darkness but the strength is also in the fact that you will always remember what has been.

This author should have won every award for this book. So if you want to read a book on the realities of grief, break up and health read this book. Go on the emotional rollercoaster that is this book, cry and then feel better for having experienced such a book.
