TRIGGER WARNINGS: ROUGH SEX, MENTAL HEALTH (ANXIETY, PANIC ATTACKS, DEPRESSION),

THIS BOOK WAS REALLY GOOD!!!

Ok, so where do I start? This book follows Queenie Jenkins and she just broke up with her white boyfriend of three years Tom. Now she is lost. In order to feel that void she starts to have sex with any and everybody.. the dude at work, some dudes she meet on the OkCupid app, etc. Why is Queen trying so hard to feel this void with sex?

What I liked most about this book is the talk about mental health in black families. In Queenie's family along with other black families around the world having or saying something wrong with you is taboo. When Queenie started expressing to her family that she has panic attacks and anxiety her grandmother and aunt wrote it off as "oh she is just sick, make her some tea and lay down" they were against her attending therapy. Once Queenie explained to them what was going on by the end of the book they understand mental health and what Queenie was going through. They even asked her questions about therapy which I liked. I also liked the discussion of how black women are seen. On one particular date Queenie talks with a man who basically downgrades Black Lives Matter and black people in general. There is a lot of disussion on how black women/people are seen in this book. the dates Queenie went on they only wanted to be involved with her because of her "curves" and her "chocolate skin" and her "big ass" but never for whats in the inside.

I seen myself in Queenie from her letting her past dictate her life as an adult by not letting go and dealing with mental health. Finding "love"or your own version of love in the wrong things. Being involved in situations that can just temporary mend you, not having a family who support you, dealing with anxiety, etc.

I liked how the author incorporated text messages and emails to break up the text. It was a pretty fast-paced book and I really enjoyed the writing style. I liked how the author added the Jamaican language for Queenie's grandparents as well. There are some graphic scenes (when Queenie is having sex with various men) so if you do not like to read about that avoid this. I honestly thought I wasn't going to like to like this book considering it took me some time to get into the story but I am glad I pushed through. This was really a great book.
