Out of 600 applicants, Candice Carty-Williams won a contest to escape to a cottage and complete their novel. From that cottage, Queenie was created: a “Bridget Jones meets Americanah,” 25-year old dealing with a breakup, work stress, discrimination, and mental health issues. I really related to Queenie in a way that made me cringe and smile all at once. I also enjoyed the writing style with the inclusion of text message chains, grasping millennial culture without being cliche. Touching on themes of blackness and bi-cultural identity, the fetishization of black women’s bodies, body positivity, healthy sex and relationships, and mental health in communities of color all with humor, complexity, and universality, Queenie is a must-read for young women of color.
