Meet Queenie Jenkins, a twenty-five year old British Jamaican woman living in London, trying to sort her sh*t out. She's lovable, a bit of a mess, and recently dumped. What I loved about this book is it was unafraid to have a messy character who constantly doubted her own actions. What woman in this modern age doesn't consistently ask herself, "What the heck am I doing with my life?" Queenie is relatable, yet she exposes the inherent racial biases of men seeking to date/fetishize her. Queenie is the epitome of a modern woman finding her way in the world. The reader roots for her, and feels for her as she undergoes loss and transformation. Candice Carty-Williams addresses the anxieties and traumas that young women feel and she does so in an unflinching way. All in all, this is a must read!
