A heartbreaking yet beautiful look at the 20-something dating game
A heartbreaking but beautiful look at the life of a black twenty something as she navigates a breakup, a floundering career, and a nervous breakdown. There have been comparison's to Bridget Jones's Diary but that wouldn't do this book justice. Yes, the main character is a sassy gal with a quick wit an an active libido, but this book is so much deeper. There's no big, fluffy romance to steer you from the deeper issues here.
"I wanted to feel good about myself. I was so far from that, so far from being who I was, but I couldn't seem to stop myself from self-destructing."
The heartbeat of this novel is the complex look at depression, self esteem, and childhood trauma as it follows Queenie through those awkward twenty something years that cause her to question who she is and what exactly she deserves. I totally remember being there and feeling so lost. There were times when I read this novel that I was like "who stole my diary and decided to write a book!?!?!" Definitely a chapter I'm thankful to have left behind but needed to grow into who I am.
Yes, some of it is cringe worthy but so much of it is also awesome as she grabs herself from her bootstraps and wills herself to be better. As she struggles she also fights and her strong spirit makes this book much deeper and more beautiful than just a fluff romance novel. This isn't about her finding Mr Right. This is about her finding herself.
