Not my usual genre but I liked it!
First of all I should admit that I generally don’t read fantasy. So the fact that I managed to get to the end of this book is really saying something about its readability! I found the action very easy to follow and the world easy to conjure, and the map at the front of the book helped too.
That said, I did get pretty bored during the middle third of the book, where the pace slowed way down. There were 100 pages or so where I almost considered DNFing the book, but the last 100 pages more than made up for it with swift action and plenty of emotion.
I liked the vivid descriptions of the characters, particularly Selestra. Her character is the main focus of the book even though Nox is the love interest. I didn’t really think the separation of chapters by their two voices was crucial to the story - it could have easily been all in Selestra’s voice, as Nox’s perspective didn’t add much.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and am glad I made the effort to break into fantasy and follow the characters through to the end!
