Danny is Chinese and his parents brought him to the US when he was 6, first to TX and now they live in California. His father is a research assistant but dreams of becoming a professor and his mother watches another family's children. Danny has recently got into his dream school, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and he is a very talented artist (drawing portraits). His parents are so excited that he will be successful after everything they have sacrificed to get him to this point. Danny's best friend is Harry Wong and he is from Taiwan. Harry is the popular, handsome, and uber rich kid. Harry's girlfriend is Regina. Danny is in love with Harry, though the book never really comes out and specifically states it. Danny finds a box in the closet with papers that have the name Ballard on them, which leaves him questioning many things about his parents past and why they moved from TX so hastily. Also, he knows he has a dead sister but his parents don't speak of her much. A tragic suicide in their high school brings Danny, Harry, and Regina into a very sad time, and they are all struggling to get through the loss of their mutual friend and classmate. This book deals with questioning sexual identity, family secrets, friendship, loss, and the courage to do what is right. The ending has quite a twist but it's very well written.
