As a 17 year old Filipino-American, this book struck a chord with me. It’s such a relevant book today, and it really exposes the kind of problems prevalent in the Philippines right now. Reading it felt exactly like my last trip to the Philippines; the author has such an interesting and descriptive voice. This might just be because I’m an emotional baby, but this book actually made me cry, and not just the ‘single tear rolling down my cheek’ way. Full on, had to close the book and lay down cry. One of my favorite books of 2019 by far. I know I talk about it like it’s only relevant to people who know what’s happening in the Philippines, but this book is really for everyone, prior knowledge or not.
