I am a little surprised by how much I enjoyed this book! I knew I would appreciate the writing, based on the First Look. And I tend to enjoy cultural novels, so it had that going for it as well. But Patron Saints of Nothing still managed to wow me. I loved the gritty realness of the characters, the flawed and broken relationships that hit home to me. I loved watching Jay find himself and his voice as he journeyed from Michigan to the Philippines, learning about his heritage as he traveled. I became invested in Jun's story and felt the grief right along with Jay as he delved into the path that his cousin's life took. And I admit to feeling shame that I had no idea about the Philippine drug wars or Duterte's leadership style. Randy Ribay is a talented voice and I am definitely going to seek out more of his work. I am so grateful to have won this one!
