The first line of Out of the Darkness is enticing enough, but it soon devolves into a lot of telling instead of showing. Not much actually happens, and what we do learn about the characters does not really endear us to them. Perhaps the book gets better, but based on this chapter, I don't care to read on.

The cover is just okay - it doesn't tell us a lot about the story. For a book with "darkness" in the title, the cover doesn't actually seem dark at all. I also feel like the title is too small.
