Kate Alice Marshall is an instant-buy & read author for me, and the excerpt of Our Last Echoes doesn't disappoint! I love the way Marshall uses alternative narrative styles in her work; The Ashford Files (and the fact that this is case #77) really opens the story immediately with all sorts of intriguing questions. Who is Ashford? What is happening? Is there a conspiracy? Will this terrify me? On that last question: probably.
There's a feeling of reader confidence that comes with a report point of view or video footage/mixed media. There isn't a narrator muddying up the waters. But considering this is a report, immediately I am wondering what aren't we being told? The narrative legitimately drew me in to stay on the first few pages and I need the rest of this book immediately.
