This is a find the ghosts story. I like those, from the first one I ever read. The lost colony of Roanoke, the Marie Celeste, so on. These were real and give us the basic framework of the story. People are at a place. Then they are gone. Other people come to find out why and how. Sometimes they vanish too. But there are never concret answers.
