Mixed feelings regarding this novel. It opens up alternating chapters, jumping back and forth between the past and present. I had a hard time really caring about the characters, at first. It also took me a long while to get through this book, which in the end I thoroughly enjoyed.

Open Heart is about Gene Hull's coming of age novel set in the 1970s, Arizona. He spots a beautiful girl while working in an orchard and falls instantly in love.
The novel deals with family life, which is complicated, and parents' expectations that trickle down and shape their children's lives. The characters and storyline are both complex with plenty of twists and turns and full of drama thrown into the mix.

I was sorry to read that the author, Gregory D. Williams passed away in 2020.
Open Heart will be his legacy.

Thank you to the publisher Marylee MacDonald and Grand Canyon Press and Bookishfirst for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
