This book is about Gene Hull, a college age young man who has suffered several recent heartbreaks. He has lost his beloved father and the girl that he believes to be the love of his life. His father was a doctor and because of his connections, Gene is able to obtain a summer internship working at the hospital where his father once worked. His job is to assist in the "heart room" where heart surgery takes place. It gives us an unflinching look at doctors and nurses as they go about doing their very important jobs and offers some pretty specific descriptions of the surgeries themselves. Gene learns much in the "heart room" about being a doctor but also discovers quite a bit about himself in the meantime.
I believe that Gene starts out the book as a typical man in his early twenties. He is not sure who he is or what he wants to do. In short, he is a boy. Through the summer, he experiences much in his personal and professional life that help him to answer some of these questions. As the end of the book approached, we start to get the feeling that Gene is on his way to becoming a man.
