A little slow for me....
This book is a book of historical fiction, that spans in its telling a few years, with flash backs to give us more background. Gene is a young man, trapped between childhood and adulthood. This is his story, and how he grew up and became a man.
This book moved very slow, and had very little action. It really was a telling of Gene’s thoughts and feelings, and what happens when he tries to grow up a little bit. We often flash back to his early relationship with the love of his life, his first girlfriend, and situations with his idol and role model, his father.
I often felt like Gene was kind of a jerk, and he had a lot of knee jerk reactions that I felt were immature and not something I would do. I felt like he was someone that was given a lot of opportunities, but was not as grateful as he should have been (for example, getting an internship in an open heart unit, when he was not even enrolled in medical school!).
Gene was hard to like, but the book was well written. I felt like the story would have engaged me more if it wasn’t so long and slow...
