This book feels like it is trying to cover a lot of ground: a broken romance, father/son relationship, medical drama, coming of age, navigating multiple traumatic events, etc. It is very detailed and researched, which is good for a historical novel, but the details seem to weigh down the story. The medical scenes were a little too graphic for my liking. I thought the cover was lovely, but it conveys a lighthearted vibe that doesn’t agree with the opening chapters.
