I thought this was a solid book from start to finish. It captured my attention in the first chapter and made me want to keep reading. It opened with with the eyewitness stumbling onto this crime scene and made us curious to learn more. What happened to this body to get it in the burned state it was in? I loved that teaser.
The author did a superb job of capturing the camaraderie between the cop partners of Morales and Jarsdel. They feel like everyday, authentic partners that have a good working relationship. Morales is the old-fashioned cop, and Jarsdel is the new guy with a penchant for annoying his partner with his historical trivia.
I wasn't crazy about the character of Aleena, she was a bit too pretentious. The story only slumped down when they got into their philosophical discussions, and the same goes for the dinner party at Jarsdel's dad's house. It's ok when cop Jarsdel throws out obscure historical references because it fits with his Ph.D background, but when several people started at it it grew boring.
I loved the setting of Hollywood for this murder mystery. It was fun to tie in all the local sites with the mystery itself, and the ending is a real ride. I look forward to more mysteries from these two cops!
