If I didn’t already love One Day You’ll Burn, a novel about an LA cop solving his first big case, I certainly would have gone berserk for it when he calls out science author Sam Kean in the Q&A in the back of the book.

Detective Tully Jarsdel gives up his career as a classics professor and his fiancee to join the LAPD. Five years in, he’s been assigned to a special homicide unit and promoted, based on his intelligence and background, not policing. When a cooked body is discovered in Thai Town, Jarsdel is the lead.

As with many books in this genre, there are tons of twists and turns, head fakes galore. But most of my guesses turned out to be wrong, so they were quite effective.

Nothing makes you feel older than an LA-based police procedural that includes a drive between Hollywood and Santa Monica. They gave enough detail that required knowledge of LA decades ago—and I knew it all. Did like the UCLA mention in that part. Go Bruins.

This was a solid novel. Had it not been clearly identified as a debut, I would have figured this was an author with dozens of books under his belt.
