One Day You'll Burn is a well written police procedural and one of the starring characters is Hollywood itself. This story simply couldn't happen anywhere else. The lead detective is a rookie called Tully Jarsdel, who left a background in academia to join the police force. His parents, both academics, completely disapprove of his new career. His partner, Morales, is a senior detective who has risen to his post through a more traditional path. The story starts with friction between the two detectives. There are two cases they are trying to solve. The first, and primary case, is a corpse found burned to death. The other is someone who poisons dogs, the day their owners get married. As they work through these disturbing cases, the detectives relationship evolves to mutual respect. This book is highly suspenseful and moves quickly. It wasn't long before I reached a point where I could not put it down.
