Tully Jarsdel is a new kind of detective, making his way up the ranks of the LAPD after spending his earlier career in academia. He's seeking acceptance from the rest of the force, especially his partner, Morales, but has not been particularly successful yet. When a burned body shows up in a location that may have cultural significance, Jarsdel's academic senses kick into gear, but he knows that pursuing this angle is only going to further alienate him from his peers. Readers will see a clear connection to Dan Brown's Robert Langdon series, but One Day You'll Burn slows down the pacing and doesn't hit the reader over the head with symbolism right away. It looks like a promising blend of a procedural and a thriller. An intriguing debut that I feel sure will find an audience.
