In starting this first look, the perspective we get before the protagonist is of a female coyote. That perfectly sums up the way this book is just kind of profoundly strange. The writing is very detailed, but in this removed graphic way that's very unsettling. It suits the story it's trying to tell, but definitely puts some distance between you and the main character.
