Before reading Once Upon a River, I read one other book by the author in a Gothic Literature class in college. I absolutely loved that book, and now I'm so happy to say that this book lived up to my expectations. It was deliciously weird - as Gothic stories normally are - but also kept me on the edge of my seat. There was some mystery elements in the story and each time I thought I had it figured out, the author threw another element in. It was a wonderful build up to a satisfying conclusion.
I loved that it was told in a fairy tale-esque way, yet the story alone could plausibly occur. I think Setterfield is a genius author and I feel no one talks about her (at least from the people I converse with!) This should change, and if you like good story telling, beautiful and lyrical writing, and weird but engaging plot lines, you should definitely pick this up!
