The magical “Once Upon A River” found it’s way into my hands at a perfect moment when the balm of it’s magical realism was good medicine. Books do that sometimes. Years ago Diane Setterfield’s novel “The Thirteenth Tale” sat on the top of my to be read pile at a time when too much was going on for me to concentrate on reading a novel. Unfortunately I never did go back to it. After reading this wonderful book, I will have to remedy that situation.

This lovely adult fairytale begins in an inn on a river where the habitues including the husband of the proprietress spend their time with the telling of tales. One night, out of the dark, a gravely injured man stumbles in holding what appears to be a dead child. And thus begins the mystery.
