I received this book in exchange for an honest review, which has not altered my opinion of the book in any way.

This was honestly a really interesting book. I enjoyed the concept of it and the included magical realism, however, I think I would have enjoyed it even more if I had known that it was a magical realism. Once my head wrapped around that, I happily sunk into the story. This story focuses on family and what makes a true family. It's emotional to the extreme at times and also sweet and romantic at others. The different families in this story really are so unique and what each of them go through end up being so difficult and terrible at certain points in the story.

This is not what I would consider being a happy read, because there are some quite intense moments and trigger warning for child death. Looking back on it, the young girl who shows up should have connected in my head more than it actually did. However, the writing was beautiful and quite descriptive. I do feel as though some parts were drawn out longer than they needed to be, which did get old pretty fast.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a deep and emotional read. The book is magical realism, but also full of romance and mystery and family moments. I would read another book by Diane Setterfield, for sure. 3.5 out of 5 from me!
