This story, in a word, was beautiful.

Just looking at the cover I knew I had to read the book. Right away we are introduced to The Swan and the river that is not the Thames and the adventure just goes from there. This was a beautiful historical mystery with a tinge of fairy tale/supernatural/magical realism.

I am not sure what I was expecting but this book delivered and then some. Though the pacing was slow it was in a slow burn way that allows the book to unfold in a meandering fashion, just like the river it is set on.

The best part of this story is how interconnected all the characters are and the vast array of them. Instead of being focused on just the child that came in as a doll that was dead that was brought to life, it was more set on the location, The Swan. At The Swan the story starts and unfolds and ripples out into the town.
